Work was starting to be too hectic for a young police officer named Lonnie. Although he had only been on the police force for two years, he was already very well known as a very hard worker who rarely refused working overtime. As a matter of fact, he was now working fifteen to twenty hours of overtime each week and, consequently, he felt like he was losing his grip on his personal life. What made the circumstances more complicated, nevertheless, was the fact that Lonnie began going out drinking with a group of fellow officers after work.
Plainly Lonnie was in a rut and going through some adverse signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie really noticed alcohol related difficulties and alcoholism signs, however, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn't really a nag, however she regularly asked him to stay at home more with her and with the kids rather than going out and spending money while drinking with his fellow officers.
In his heart of hearts, it was obvious to Lonnie that his excessive and hazardous drinking was adversely affecting his pocketbook, health, work, and his relationship with his family. So one Wednesday afternoon Lonnie got energized and made up his mind to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer buddy that he greatly admired.
Lonnie told Richard how abusive and excessive drinking was adversely affecting his health, work, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook. Richard articulated to Lonnie that he totally understood because roughly thirteen years ago, he too got involved in abusive and careless drinking. In fact, Richard told Lonnie that abusive and excessive drinking can create so many problems in an individual's life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And finally, Richard recommended that Lonnie make an appointment with an alcohol counselor at the work-affiliated drug and alcohol addiction treatment clinic.
Due to the fact that his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this rehabilitation center, it was not only convenient but also quite affordable to seek guidance about his abusive and careless drinking. And due to the fact that the staff at the alcohol abuse center was supportive, non-judgmental, and competent, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol rehabilitation that was doable and something he could follow through on.
After talking to his psychologist about how his drinking was ruining his pocketbook, health, work, and his relationship with his family, Lonnie grasped the fact that he was burning the candle at both ends with his hectic work hours and his irresponsible and hazardous drinking. Once he realized that he was digging himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the help of his psychologist, and after twelve weeks in rehab, he was finally able to stop drinking and quit working overtime.
The result was that Lonnie perceived life in a different way now that he was in alcohol recovery and learned about alcoholism facts. More specifically, due to his alcohol rehabilitation he not only felt better and more healthy, but he had more quality time to spend with his family, he was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, and he noticed that he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week. As luck would have it, now that he stopped drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more alert and more energized than anytime since he and his wife got married.
