It seems that everywhere around us things are changing at a very fast rate. The main contributing factor to all of the change appears to be the rise in the number of people that reside in the United States. Less and less land is being utilized for farming; instead it is being developed into housing.

A couple of years ago my husband and I saw that rich individuals were buying up lots on lakes. They would locate cottages on the market along the lakes area and would demolish the cottage and replace it with a huge brand-new structure. We noticed numerous smaller lakes which we liked fishing on were abruptly surrounded by massive homes. One lake in specific we noticed this occurring on. The large homes took away the north woods feeling from the lake. My husband and I had discussed finding cottages on the market which we could update and have as a get away. We determined that the way properties were moving we had better make our move for cottages on the market while there were still a few available.

You see, years before we had experienced a similar circumstance in the shore city of Santa Barbara. For many years, we vacationed there and stayed in Santa Barbara hotels. We saw people leasing cottages rather than stay in the somewhat expensive Santa Barbara hotels, and decided to investigate a cottage rental to keep away from paying steep rates at these Santa Barbara hotels. Well, looking to rent a cottage turned into wanting to buy, however, we hesitated too long and the market took off, with prices rising outside of our range. We promised never to make the same mistake again.

We decided one Saturday afternoon to go out for a drive around two lakes that we have always enjoyed. One of the lakes is very large and the other was littler, but there is a channel which goes from this small lake into a bigger lake. A great portion of this lake and the surrounding area were in a state park. We had been cross country snow-skiing in the state park during the winter months and we had observed that there were numerous privately owned cabins next to the state land. We talked about how private the area was. We went back to the place to see if anything was available on the market. We turned down one small road that we had not ever been on before. The road led to what had been a small resort. There were signs listing cottages available. The resort had been shut for quite a few years. The majority of the buildings needed to be repaired. Two of the cottages for sale had been updated within the past six or seven years. The cottages were close to the edge of the lake and were surrounded by pine trees. It was a very lovely setting, but we were worried about who would perform the upkeep on the road when it snowed. We are still looking at cottages on the market. I know that it's only a matter of some time before we find the ideal place for us.
