I am often astounded to see the how magnificent and outrageous the fashion industry has become. For some reason it's hard for me to fathom people and their complete love for clothes. Don't get me wrong! I like a great pair of pants as much as the next guy, but you won't catch me forking out hundreds of dollars for a pair of jeans, or even for plus size coats, which can be high-priced. Forget it. Not that my taste has any effect on the style industry what-so-ever. Oodles of youthful people are going to fashion design and merchandising colleges to better learn the industry. Hey, I can not say that I blame them. There's plenty of money to be made there. I am pretty sure Tom Ford is starving these days.
When I asked my teenage daughter what field she wished to pursue, she began rambling on about fashion design and marketing. Hmm, big shock! What teenage girl is not interested in the fashion world? And I thought - hey, possibly she can get me a deal on my plus size coats! As far as i can see, they all go ga-ga over clothing, shoes, and accessories. At any rate, she began taking a high school course in fashion design and merchandising her senior year. Regrettably she hated it. Now she is a bit torn about her future plans. She still dreams of a job in the fashion industry, but is naturally worried about whether or not she'll like it. I told her to give fashion styling and merchandising another shot when she heads off to college next year. And no-one said she had to delve into this specific aspect of the fashion world. There are a few options out there. She could market swimsuits, jeans, evening wear, plus size coats, wedding attire, avant garde fashion...the possibilities are end-less.
It's certainly a difficult business. If you truly want to see how things work, check out the Style network now and then in order to see real clothing designers in their world. Or you can catch that little reality tv series "The Hills." Although the main character in this show has a good deal of money coming in from her folks, she's getting a fine dose of the fashion styling and marketing world. It's definitely not all glitz and glam from the start, but I'm sure any lucrative clothes designer can tell you that. You have to be willing to work hard and compete with the many.
