Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, The Correlation Between Coping Skills And Abusive Drinking, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Education

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol addiction specialists think that liquor, wine, and beer advertisements produced by the media are a key reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol addiction experts state that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of wine, beer, and liquor in our society. Still other alcohol abuse experts claim that more than a few of our young people involve themselves in risky drinking because of the increased apprehension that they go through.

From a somewhat different viewpoint, due to the fact that both parents in quite a few families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance unquestionably has to play a key role in the spread of teenage alcohol abuse. And lastly, different alcohol addiction professionals believe that the proliferation of teenage alcohol abuse is due, in some way, to our lax society.

One aspect of teenage alcohol abuse that seems to be under reported in the alcohol addiction research findings, in spite of this, is the dearth of educational courses that teach teenagers how to enhance their coping skills so that their abusive and hazardous drinking behavior is substantially lessened or eradicated. More to the point, scientific research has displayed the fact that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and hazardous and abusive drinking.

Essentially, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the higher the rate of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a valid contention, why isn't coping skills education a major part of the academic curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us create a scenario for the purpose of clarification. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to achieve first rate coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets difficult, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more creative way, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into operation.

More precisely, students who show evidence of first rate coping skills will be more able to think proactively and display first-class decision making as opposed to teens were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop quality coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of hazardous and abusive drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, what's more, if teenagers not only received top quality coping skills training but also got an excellent education that outlined the long term and short term damaging outcomes associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills training, it is advocated, would help teenagers stay away from the obvious charm related to adolescent drinking and, consequently, would significantly decrease the abusive drinking behavior displayed by adolescents in our country.

There are obviously several convincing reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in a hazardous manner. Such a complex problem demands a thorough and more applicable response by our parents, educators, politicians, and students so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more fruitful and accountable way rather than resorting to unhealthy drinking to solve their difficulties.
