Even though Franklin wasn't an attorney, he told his son that he learned the hard way when as a young man he received a "driving under the influence" arrest, represented himself in court, paid thirty-five hundred dollars in fines and penalties, and served two month in jail. As he told his son, after he got released from jail, he found out from a lawyer friend that had he hired a "driving under the influence" attorney in the first place, he more likely than not would have had his fines and penalties considerably reduced and he may have never served any jail time.

Something else, however, happened after he had talked to his father. Lawrence at last began to comprehend the critical nature of "driving under the influence" arrests and, as a result, he made up his mind that from this moment forward, he would always drink responsibly so that he would never again have to go through another "driving under the influence" arrest.
His dad smiled at Lawrence and mentioned the following: "son, it took me until I was thirty-five years old to realize what you just told me. I am very proud of you." This did wonders for his self esteem and so Lawrence thanked his dad and then said, "if I can always drink responsibly, I will never have to hire a DWI attorney again!"
Regrettably, there was one issue that neither Lawrence nor his father considered, namely, if Lawrence is manifesting any alcohol abuse signs or perhaps if he is exhibiting any of the typical signs of alcoholism. In truth, if Lawrence is exhibiting any alcohol signs that indicate alcohol abuse or alcohol addiction, he may need alcohol rehabilitation.
In all honesty, Lawrence may be required by the court to get rehab for his unhealthy and excessive drinking. The good news, however, is that whatever it takes to address his excessive and careless drinking, it appears that Lawrence will be motivated to do the "correct" thing.
