Richard had a very difficult time keeping a job. As a matter of fact, due to his sluggishness and lack of incentive, he was unemployed far more often than he was in work. And when he did get a job, he had a very difficult time getting to work in a timely manner, he regularly received less than optimal performance reviews, and he called off sick so frequently that he typically got fired three or four weeks after he started working.
It goes without saying that one of the results of Richard's disgraceful employment record was the fact that he was just about flat broke much of the time. Despite Richard's appalling work history and financial negligence, then again, one way or another he made it his business to drink in an irresponsible and excessive manner much of the time.
So it came as no big shock when Richard got arrested for a second DUI. When he went before the court, the magistrate told Richard that his alcohol-related actions was shameful and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to serve eight months in jail.
During his time behind bars, Richard was expected to learn more about alcoholism facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the harmful results of abusive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol rehab. The judge highlighted the fact that unless Richard gets quality alcohol counseling and learns how to live a life of abstinence, he will quite possibly be spending a lot more time locked up.
Richard articulated that he understood what the judge was asserting but he still stated that incarceration was not the correct verdict. The judge saw things from an entirely different perspective and stated that it was his responsibility to keep individuals off the streets who drink and drive and who get arrested for one or more DUIs. To authenticate this statement, the magistrate quoted some honored, comprehensively researched alcoholism and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that underscored some of the unhealthy outcomes that are linked to abusive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.
Even though Richard understood that he drank excessively, he never thought that he was an alcohol addicted person. So it was a big bombshell when Richard began experiencing chronic alcoholism signs and symptoms and alcohol withdrawals around four-and-a-half hours after getting locked up in the municipal jail.
To manage his alcohol withdrawals in a harm free manner, Richard was taken by ambulance to an alcohol rehabilitation hospital for alcohol detox and then brought back to jail. While locked up in jail Richard was given alcohol treatment but because he received this counseling as something that was imposed upon him, he did not take ownership of his hazardous and excessive drinking.
When his time in jail was over, the magistrate told Richard that he would be under strict scrutiny and would be mandated to take random urine alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard did not take ownership of his drinking situation and how he reluctantly followed the counseling modus operandi while in jail, the judge knew that it was essentially a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his irresponsible and hazardous drinking behavior.
As the judge reflected on Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some people never figure things out and discover how to live in a responsible manner.
