Linda and Frank have been seeing one another for four years. They met while enrolled in the same financial accounting class at a small, rural, liberal arts college located in the Midwestern part of the United States. While they were mostly good buddies at first, they eventually started dating when they were in their third year of college.
Since both of them came from very strict backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much beyond the experimental stage when they first started to date. As the time passed by, nonetheless, they began to go to more keg parties, sorority and fraternity parties, football bashes, and happy hours. Consequently, they gradually began to drink more as they progressed in their relationship.
After they graduated, they both found employment in a medium size city that was located around seventy-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they eventually made up their mind to move in with one another.
With any significant alteration in a person's life there is frequently something that causes the specific change in question. For Frank and Linda the idea of having children and buying a new house was this "trigger." Stated more forcefully, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank began to reflect on their abusive and excessive drinking and the long term negative consequences of alcohol on their health. As an illustration, they started to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their excessive and heavy drinking.
Would their excessive drinking negatively affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending almost all of their money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?
From a different line of reasoning, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a "drunk driving" arrest, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their abusive and heavy drinking was becoming a thorny issue that they could not ignore anymore. All of these inquiries clearly indicated the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to identify more completely with the fact that they couldn't continue their abusive and heavy drinking if their dreams, hopes, and plans were to be realized.
Once they came to this conclusion, they advised their drinking friends about their their marital plans, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their plans to start a family. They also told their drinking pals that they still wanted to hang around with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this moment forward so that they could begin realizing their future goals, aspirations, and dreams.
Surprisingly, all of their pals expressed relief because they too had been reexamining their lives and concluded that their life-styles were too centered around drinking. They also realized that they would have to change significantly if they were to become more adult-like and display more concern for their health, their careers, and for their goals in the next fifteen or twenty years.
After their heart-to-heart discussion with their friends about their hopes, aspirations, and dreams, Frank and Linda actually started to have more significant relationships with all of their buddies. The main reason for this was the fact that all of them were on the same wave-length regarding their irresponsible and abusive drinking and their short and long-term goals, plans, and aspirations.
