For the past sixteen years Carolyn has been a professional nurse at a large urban hospital. As a nurse practitioner, she obviously knew what to tell her patients about their health issues but in her off-duty life, however, she clearly didn't practice what she taught. For example, she regularly drank in an abusive and excessive manner, she almost never exercised, she smoked at least two packs of cigarettes per day, and she was almost fourteen pounds overweight.
One day on her way to the hospital, Carolyn got into a traffic accident. Because the accident was her fault and since her speech was slurred when she talked, the arresting highway patrolman gave her a breathalyzer test a breathalyzer test. According to standard police policy, when an individual becomes involved in an automobile accident and fails to pass a breath alcohol test, the individual has to spend at least six hours in jail.
In fact, Carolyn should have known better than to drive after she had been drinking because she recently attended an alcohol abuse awareness class at the hospital that focused on information about long term alcohol effects such as the following: binge drinking, alcohol poisoning, DUIs, and the main differences between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse.
Needless to say, Carolyn was humiliated by her car accident. In addition she experienced quite a bit of shame about the fact that the accident was her fault. And possibly worst of all she felt ashamed of the fact that she was driving after she ingested a few drinks. As Carolyn reflected on her circumstance, however, she realized how fortunate she was because down the line her drinking problems could have been a lot worse due to the long term effects of alcohol.
In any event, Carolyn's humiliation about her automobile accident made her review her life and make some substantial and beneficial changes. First, she was going to quit drinking in a hazardous and abusive manner. This would certainly help her avoid long term alcohol abuse. Second, she was going to stop smoking. Third, she was going to lose some weight. And fourth, she was going to start exercising.
As sad and depressed as Carolyn was about the entire car accident situation, she used this upsetting experience as a springboard for positive change. Moreover, she used her sorrowful experience as a real eye opener that she had been overlooking her own health while she professionally told other individuals how to live a more healthy life. After all had been said and done, she eventually saw the hypocrisy in her behavior and finally determined that she would live her life as a positive source of affirmation for others.
