A Night Out With College Buddies At A Local Nightspot Results In Abusive Drinking And Alcohol Poisoning

When Lois was in high school, she had established a reputation as a book worm who rarely, if ever, partied with her classmates. She seemed determined to do well academically so that she would be able to pursue a career that she not only liked but one that also gave her some financial security.

After Lois completed high school, she applied to and was accepted into an esteemed program in English. Her reasoning for this decision was that this subject area would be good preparation for law school and would not be similar to the majority of law school applicants who choose political science as their undergraduate major or minor.

Lois was the kind of individual who worked in a diligent manner to complete what she was doing and then would take a break when she could. As it turns out, nonetheless, most of the things she did between terms or during summer breaks did not have much to do with drinking. It almost goes without saying that Lois was anything but a party-girl. Now that her finals for her second year in law school were over and feeling happy that she had done extremely well on her tests, nevertheless, she wanted to take a break and do some celebrating.

So Lois and some of her pals went to a local pub where they had a few shots. As the evening went by, Lois and her friends continued to drink. In fact, she was having such a fantastic time that she didn't want the night to end.

After drinking about fifty minutes when Lois started to talk in a confused manner, slur her speech, and then fall unconscious, in spite of this, her friends promptly knew that they needed to call that they needed to call 911, the emergency number, and ask for medical assistance because they suspected that Lois was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms.

Lois was very aware that she had dodged a bullet and almost died from an alcohol overdose and, as a result, was grateful to be alive. At the same time, however, she was somewhat dejected knowing that she had almost died the previous night. Her parents knew how hard she worked at school and how little she let herself have any fun. Nonetheless, they also knew that Lois needed to avoid excessive and hazardous drinking.

As a result, they suggested that down the road, whenever a drinking situation presents itself, that she always drink in moderation. Lois was in agreement with this and gave her word to her friends and to her parents that she would never again drink in an irresponsible manner. In her own words, "I never thought that I might become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local university newspaper. I now know that careless drinking is not the best for me. I swear that this will never happen again."

Fortunately, Lois was not only "book smart" but she also had. That is, she quickly knew that she had made a mistake and decided that she would never make the same mistake again. In truth, she now realized that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this form of excessive and hazardous drinking can end in a fatality.
