Sometimes, what may appear to be an acne scar is actually not a true scar; rather, it might only be a slightly inflamed or red area where the acne lesion is a bit slow to heal. These small red flat spots, also called macules, may appear almost the same as a scar but, fortunately, they usually disappear entirely within about six months.
In more persistent cases, even though an acne lesion has healed, there might be some color alteration in the skin's pigment, but this may occasionally be mistaken for an acne scar. These marks will normally go away in about 12 to 18 months, fading with time, and are not truly scars.
