A Health And Physical Education Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Relevance Of Alcoholism Signs



Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the largest parochial high school in the county. Even though she had been teaching for only two years, she had already gained a reputation as an instructor with instructional approaches that inspired and stimulated her students to think and to learn.

For instance, one Monday morning at 10:00 she addressed the students in her class and said the following: "For the next week we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more wide-ranging standpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed viewpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably show that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol addicted individual, but the more signs that an individual displays, the stronger the probability that he or she is a person who is alcohol dependent."

Miss Jackson then told the members in the class that each student would be responsible for studying three alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her findings to the class via a six minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her classroom to study the list and rank the top five alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After about five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and informed the pupils in her class that after she examines the results, she will present her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told the pupils in her class to look over the numbers and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 40 or 50 seconds, just about everyone in the class raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the pupils had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. As an illustration, virtually every individual in the class disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, that is, "Do you feel extremely sick when you stop drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the students in her classroom why this answer was the most unambiguous indicator of alcoholism. She pointed out that the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.

Essentially this means that when an alcohol addicted individual abruptly stops drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcoholic, the students started to understand the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signifying the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson realized that she had motivated and encouraged her students to stop and think about an essential social problem and health issue that exists in our culture.
